With the current global conditions making it impossible to hold our regular in-person value-added events, on August 25 American Industries hosted its first independent webinar with the participation of distinguished business and industry guest speakers who shared their in-depth knowledge and extensive experience on the opportunities in the manufacturing and logistics environment in Mexico.
Speakers highlighted the advantages of working together as a North American trading bloc and focused on the current opportunities that are available to international companies in Mexico, especially in the rapidly expanding medical devices and equipment industry in the state of Chihuahua. In addition, they shared how their companies have achieved success in manufacturing in Mexico by working with a trusted shelter services partner.
The first speaker was Rolando Pablos, former Texas Secretary of State who currently works with Cross-National Advisory Partners in guiding and assisting governmental, private sector and non-profit organizations in accessing domestic and foreign markets. Among other benefits of Mexico manufacturing, he spoke about the North America First initiative aimed at increasing cooperation between the three countries in order to leverage their combined capabilities and create more opportunities for the entire region. He also spoke about how the Borderplex Manufacturing Hub along the Chihuahua City-El Paso corridor offers the best of both worlds for companies looking to set up there. The area has over 60 years’ industry experience with factories on both sides of the border, a robust logistics network, including infrastructure, warehousing, customs programs, a vast supplier base, and a qualified workforce with universities and training programs. In addition, the area’s long-term coordinated binational efforts to reach regional integration, including local, state and federal governments, has made it a very attractive destination for companies from all over the world looking to start up operations in Mexico with hundreds of maquiladoras already operating there.
The second speaker was Alejandra de la Vega, current Secretary of Innovation and Economic Development for the State of Chihuahua, who shared information about the medical devices industry in Chihuahua and current opportunities for regional makers and startup companies looking for manufacturing partners. She highlighted that Chihuahua is a global leader in medical devices industry, representing 8% of worldwide medical devices exports. She noted that Mexico is more competitive than ever, as changes in the market have shifted the priorities of both companies and consumers. Due to the recent unprecedented surge in demand for medical devices and equipment, cost is no longer the most important factor for consumers; now, quality and access are more highly valued, making the area increasingly attractive for medical device manufacturing.
Next, Emma Schwartz, President of the Medical Center of the Americas (MCA) Foundation added to the previous speakers’ comments, delving further into global medical devices industry trends and opportunities. She highlighted that the global medical devices industry market is rapidly expanding; currently valued at $425.5 billion USD in 2018, it is expected to reach $612.7 billion by 2025. She mentioned how an aging population and extended life expectancy will fuel increasing demand for medical devices that are more durable, longer lasting and accurate and how Mexico’s product development and high-quality production brings added value to the industry. This represents important opportunities for companies in the sector looking to set up manufacturing in Mexico, as it will allow them to avoid future supply chain disruptions and mitigate future widespread shortages.
Next, Wilfredo Ruiz-Caban, Executive Vice President of Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs and Operations for CONMED shared his experiences in working with American Industries Group and how his company has expanded and increased its profits and market share by operating using shelter services in Mexico since 2008. His company, with a facility in the plastics and electronic manufacturing sector that services the US market and the world is required to comply with a range of demanding global regulatory requirements. He emphasized how its Mexican partner integrity and focus on ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements has helped his company to maintain and grow its good reputation. He noted how American Industries has always demonstrated a commitment to doing things the right way, operating with urgency, always understanding their needs, and connecting them to the right people and resources they need in a timely manner.
Lastly, Adan Gomez, Business Development Director at American Industries Group, wrapped up the webinar by discussing the different options for setting up operations in Mexico and how using shelter services allows companies to ensure a soft landing in Mexico and allows them to focus on what they do best—their operations.
