As the world toasted on New Year’s Eve to welcome in 2020, no one suspected or was prepared for how 2020 would unfold. All our best laid plans were completely derailed with the onset of an unprecedented situation that would quickly sweep across the planet, disrupting the daily routines of both individuals and international companies in Mexico and around the world, forcing us to reevaluate priorities and establish a new normal. All this while carrying the burden of worry for the not only our own health, but that of our loved ones and communities, and mourning a life and era that is gone forever.
Despite the difficulties that all changes bring, and especially one so drastic and all-encompassing, this crisis has also highlighted the fact that, in many ways, our old normal was broken and damaging to our societies and planet. Being so caught up in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we rarely took time to reflect on how the way of life we have gradually adopted over the last century has become increasingly detrimental to our health and the environment.
This situation has thrown us all off the proverbial hamster wheels we had been so focused on and given us the gift of time and perspective to reflect on how we will move forward and adapt to the constant change our collective future holds. It has shown us the importance of resilience and reinventing ourselves in ways we hadn’t thought possible, allowing us to think outside the box to develop innovative solutions in our homes, businesses and communities. Technology has also played an increasingly important role in both our personal and professional lives, allowing us to connect us with loved ones and the world, work remotely, and attend virtual conferences, and continuing education events.
Of course, the world will keep turning. Life will go on, and we are now charged with working together to make the new normal better, and more sustainable, than the old normal. By reevaluating our priorities as a global society and reorganizing our lives to ensure we place more importance on what is truly valuable to us, we will come out of this crisis stronger, more able to adapt, and with more compassion for our fellow human beings.
Here in Mexico, as across the world, the simple things we took for granted, including going to the grocery store or the movies, seeing a concert, or eating out at restaurants, have been transformed forever. Entire industries, including the entertainment, service and tourism sectors, as well as Mexico manufacturing, which was completely halted for a time, are working to adapt to new regulations to ensure the safety of their workers and the continuity of their businesses. On the other hand, governments and communities are working to implement solutions and health and safety guidelines that will allow us to resume our activities in ways that will ensure both our mental and physical health.
As we cautiously forge this new path towards a new normal as a society and in our governments and businesses, it is important to remember that we are all in this together and have the same goal—to come out the other side of this crisis having created a new and improved version of ourselves, our communities and our businesses that is more proactive, resilient, innovative and flexible.
